Book Reviewing.
In addition to blog reading and writing this weekend, I had to finish a book for the book group I’m trying to enjoy. Eat Pray Love. Yes, the Oprah-approved and NYT best seller journey to self-discovery (self-discipline?).
I loved Italy, the eat portion of the journey. Big surprise there if you saw yesterday’s cookie post. I loved it so much that at one point during Saturday’s book-group-is-tomorrow cram session I thought about heading for the airport, credit card in hand.
‘Rolling around in her words’ is how a friend described her enjoyment of the book. Yep. That’s what it’s all about. And honestly, that’s how I feel about many of the blogs I read. Words. Insights. Direction, albeit unintended. It’s all there.
The book group is, I’m fairly certain, 99% lesbian members. I found myself wondering as we discussed the book if the take aways would be any different were we a group of straight women? Surely identifying with the author’s ‘bathroom floor’ moment is universal? Or is it?
Drama and then some seems to permeate every lesbian community I’ve ever been a part of — from somewhat undefined at the time high school ‘clique’ to the college dorm to the bar scene, settled coupledom, etc. I don’t understand it, but accept it, and that I’ve quite possibly created some myself from time to time. (Go ahead, comment, you know you want to!)
I don’t know that it’s a function of being lesbian. I’ve always kind of thought it was a by-product of the intensity women bring to their (and others’!) relationships.
Hmm.

I’m reading this one for my (non-lesbian) book group now (would love to know what your group thought of it). I did a blog post a few days ago about how divisive this book is, and the conversation it sparked in the comments section is quite interesting.. people have such strong feelings about it.
